Forms of Home Security

In today’s society it is getting to the point where everyone needs to have some form of home security in their home. Many people like to have some form of home security because it adds a sense of protection and piece of mind to them while they are at home and while they are away from home. Many people feel that if they have an exceptional public safety agency in their area they should not worry about home security, but the fact is they still really do. You do not have to get an expensive security system to have adequate protection, but they are always an option if you can afford them. You need to try to figure out how to prevent a break-in in your home, know what kind of security system would be right your particular home, and have an emergency plan in place just in case. If you are going on vacation or take a lot of business trips you should look into the best ways there are to help get your home ready and protected from break-ins.

You need to look around at your particular neighborhood to see how at risk you may be, and to help determine what kinds of security measures you should take. Look at your public safety facilities and make sure that there are an ample amount of police officers on duty for each shift. Check and see if your neighborhood has any kind of neighborhood watch program, and if they do not see if anyone would be interested in starting one. Some neighborhoods are just more at risk than others, so just keep a watchful eye on happenings around your home.

If you are away from home a lot you may want to look into getting some sort of security system. Where as if you have a larger family where someone is almost always home you may be less at risk. The value of your home and possessions can also put your home at more of a risk, but less valuable items can also tempt thieves if they think they can get rid of the items easily.

Besides protecting your home you might want to look into also installing motion sensing lights around your home as well as driveway alarms. This could help protect your vehicles as well as your garage or carport and items found in them. You might also want to look into installing a car alarm or some other sort of car theft prevention to help protect your vehicles.

There are a few things many people do around there homes that are suppose to help discourage break-ins, but in reality actually help burglars out. For instance, people like to place high security/privacy fences around their property in the hopes of having privacy from there close neighbors as well as to keep unwanted people off of their property. In reality many burglars like security/privacy fences because once they get inside the fenced-in area they are free to roam around because the neighbors in the community can not see them. People also like to plant large shrubs around their homes, and in many cases this is so people from the outside can not see in their windows. Burglars also like homes that have these large shrubs because they can hide behind them until they get inside the home, and then once inside no one can see through the windows so they are again free to roam around the house.

Here is a short list of the basics you should have to help protect your home:

  • A control unit, usually located near the front door of your home, that can interpret and respond to signals
  • Timers for all interior and exterior motion lights
  • Motion detectors of some kind in key areas inside and outside your home
  • Perimeter sensors around your property and on outside windows and doors
  • A connection to a central monitoring station that will alert the police when there is a breach in the system
  • Possibly security cameras for the inside and outside of your home
  • Possibly sirens or another noise making device when there is a breach in the security system
  • Most of all use common sense, if something or someone looks out of place around your home or neighborhood call the police
